«People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing — that’s why we recommend it daily». Zig Ziglar.

The word'motivation' literally means 'what motivates us to take action.' A person's motivation causes them to act in a certain way in response to a certain circumstances. Motivation is a term used in psychology to describe the activation of individuals from within the organism. It's also known as the "natural spring" of action and behavior.Motivation stems from an individual's gut reaction to an object or situation in the surroundings. Such a mental emotion motivates or drives one to take action. As a result, the value of motivation in education cannot be overstated.

Young learners, such as those in preschool and kindergarten, will have little personal motivation to learn English.

It's just another subject they have to learn in school or that their parents have told them they should learn. They may not realize or realize how significant these classes are at this stage in their lives.It's ok if they see classes as just another enjoyable everyday activity. You may encourage kids to develop an interest in studying English even at this young age, and this enthusiasm will last long after your sessions are over.

Is motivation important during classes?

Indeed, the role of motivation in education is to achieve educational goals and is always goal-oriented. As a result, it can't be described as mechanical or blind. The goal or objective to be achieved is determined by the object or circumstance in the environment. This concept of the end produces an emotion in the mind that leads to action, which is referred to as motive.

As a result, the relevance of motivation in education might be defined as "feeling enthralled by the prospect of achieving a goal." The reason of feeling and its subsequent action is considered to be the idea of the end or goal. As a result, a man is motivated to act when he has a vision or idea of what he wants to achieve. As a result, motivation is defined as being elated by the end outcome. It motivates people to act in order to achieve a goal.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation for Learning English

There are two sorts of motivation for learning English: intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic motivation is a drive that originates in a person's mind. When people like doing something, they are intrinsically driven.

Extrinsic motivation is a drive that originates outside of the individual. When people wish to get a reward (such a trophy or a good grade) or avoid a punishment, they are extrinsically driven.

In general, rewarding someone who already has intrinsic motivation reduces their intrinsic motivation, making them less interested in the activity and, as a result, lowering their performance.When someone isn't interested in a subject—that is, when they don't have any intrinsic drive to learn about it—giving prizes can encourage them to participate in the activity, which may eventually spark some intrinsic desire. Extrinsic motivation has the potential to lead to intrinsic motivation.Though this isn't always the case, the majority of ESL students have a natural desire to study English. They have a certain objective in mind, whether it is related to business, academics, or something else entirely, and English is required to achieve it. As a result, they wish to start studying the language.With this in mind, excessive praise or extrinsic incentives may actually impede their learning. As a result, you'll get the best results from your students if you focus on encouraging them intrinsically rather than extrinsically. To put it another way, rather than enticing kids to study with external prizes, foster their natural desire to study.

Smart Techniques for Motivating Students to Learn English

1. Make the classroom more communicative

Making class communicative is one method to increase your students' intrinsic drive.

Using language to communicate is part of the fun of learning it. When language learners are able to successfully put their thoughts into words and communicate their ideas, they get a rush.

  • Group exercises are an excellent approach to increase communication in the classroom. Encourage kids to collaborate using the language they already know to achieve a goal;
  • Make the most of your seating by avoiding the usual rows and columns. Arrange student desks to create larger tables so that they may communicate with one another;
  • If all else fails, keep your students talking by cutting down on teacher speaking time (TTT). The less you speak, the more your kids will speak, which means they will put their language skills to use.
2. Make English Usable
  • People dislike wasting their time on useless activities. They want to know that whatever they do has a purpose, even if it is as simple as digging a hole. When you keep your activities practical, you may emphasize their purpose.Using realia whenever possible in class is one approach to make things practical. Realia is a term used to describe things developed with native speakers in mind.

Bringing realia into the classroom will better prepare your students for what they will encounter outside of the classroom.

  • Another method to stay focused on the practical is to role play. Giving pupils real-life circumstances that they will likely face in the real world will allow them to train for the future in a safe setting.
3. Make Class a Good Time

Making class enjoyable is a certain approach to increase intrinsic drive.

Students will be more engaged in learning if they are having fun. Rather than you motivating them, they will motivate themselves. All you have to do now is figure out how to make your students have fun while they learn.

  • Use social media in class;
  • Invite pop culture into class. People love movies, magazines and contemporary music;
  • Gamify your lessons!.
4. Forge Relationships

People, on the whole, don't care what you know unless they know you care. That is why it is critical to form relationships with your students. You may be the only English speaker your students see or talk with on a regular basis, especially if you're teaching overseas pupils. Before you can motivate your students, you must first provide support.

Encourage cultural expressions in class to show your kids that you care about them and their backgrounds. Keep an eye out for chances for students to discuss their values, beliefs, and traditions.

5. Give Feedback

Always take feedback into consideration. Forging the proper relationships with your students requires the proper amount and quality of feedback.

It's significant to provide both good and negative feedback, such as praise and encouragement. If you have some constructive criticism to provide, combine it with some positive remarks. When something painful is preceded and followed by something pleasant, it is much easier to hear. This way, no one will think you're picking on them.

To sum up, we can see that motivation is extremely important because it helps our students to believe in their own strength and enjoy the studying process.Every teacher's job includes motivating kids.

While honey and vinegar are delicious in the kitchen, the best kind of inspiration comes from within your students.

We set students up for success long after they leave classrooms when we develop intrinsic motivation in them.
